But Why?
One of the most common questions from children and adults alike starts with “Why...” Why does the sun come up? Why do we have to go to so and so’s house? Why did God create the universe? Why is there suffering? Many good questions begin with “why”. It shows humanity’s innate need to assign meaning to our existence. This is directly related to us being created in the image and likeness of God. A God who “know[s] the plans [He has] for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.” (Jeremiah 29:11)
God is infinite; thus, it is impossible for us to understand the why of every situation and contingency due to our limited perspective and finitude. That is not to say we cannot know the why of anything; we can certainly understand many things because of our intellect, a gift from God. However, we cannot know everything, but we can understand that God is all good and all loving via our reason, past experiences, and the testimony of others. Creation, the Scriptures, the Saints, and our own openness to seeing God’s goodness in our life shows us that God is good, even if his ways are above our ways. (Isaiah 55:8) This can help us trust in God's goodness during difficult times of doubt, suffering, or confusion. “I will sing of the steadfast love of the LORD, forever; with my mouth I will make known your faithfulness to all generations.” (Psalm 89:1)
I certainly have experienced God’s goodness over the past two years as pastor of St. Joseph, Pillar of Families. Has it been difficult? Yes. Have there been moments that challenged and provoked me? Absolutely. Did I want to blame others at some points? Yes, but prayer and steadfast friends helped me to see opportunities instead of obstacles. Do I believe God has something better in store for me and all of you? 100%! I am grateful for every experience I have had over the past two years and throughout my entire life. Because “for those who love God all things work together for good.” (Romans 8:28) I pray that each of us will maintain such wisdom throughout our life no matter what may come.
Please remember to check the bulletin for our Holy Week schedule. It is the holiest time of year, so do not miss out. Holy Week is the week of our salvation, we walk in real time with our Lord as He works our redemption by His Passion, Death, and Resurrection. May our hearts be truly conformed to the Paschal mystery which is at the center of our Faith.
Thank you to our musicians who have to put in so much preparation for the celebration of Lent, Holy Week, and Easter. May the Lord bless them for the work they put into adding solemnity to our liturgies.
Peace in Christ,
Father Jarred Kohn
