ADVENT AND RECONCILIATION

Lori ElsassPastor

“It is now the hour for you to wake from sleep, for our salvation is nearer now than when we first believed; the night is advanced, the day is at hand. Let us then throw off the works of darkness and put on the armor of light” (Romans 13:11-12).

This particular passage reminds us of the need for repentance and conversion in preparation for the coming of Christ.

Advent is a perfect time to begin this journey of preparation.  In order for our Advent to reach its fullest potential, it is necessary to explore deeply the endeavor of holiness that includes ongoing repentance and conversion. The penitential aspect of Advent urges us to recognize oneself as being a sinner, and therefore take the first essential step in returning to God.

To make a good confession one must:

  1. Examine his conscience
  2. Have sincere regret for having offended God
  3. Have a firm resolution to do his best to avoid sin in the future
  4. Clearly confess his sins (all mortal sins, according to kind and number, and at least some of the more significant venial sins)
  5. Perform the assigned penance

In the remaining days of this Advent season, please take advantage of the reconciliation schedule offered here at Holy Angels:  Saturdays from 4:00-5:00 p.m., Thursdays from 7:00-8:00 p.m., and before all Sunday Masses.

Growing in virtue is a life-long endeavor whose fruits will be experienced in the fullest sense only in Heaven.
